Three authors with something to share

Ed James had experienced the difference Mark and Nicky Taylor’s work could make first-hand. A BBC radio presenter and entrepreneur, he brought his own experience of changing his thinking to their expertise in behaviour and relationships. Together, they wanted to help adults recover some of the curiosity, confidence and enjoyment they had known as children.

Be More Kid grew from that shared idea. Its readers would be people caught up in overthinking, other people’s expectations and the feeling that life ought to offer more. The authors had the experience to help. Now they needed to bring it together in a book.

The first draft felt like their book

From the first conversation with Georgia, Ed felt the enthusiasm behind the project. She understood what they wanted to say and was excited about helping them say it. As the manuscript developed through WBR’s Book Creation Process, he came to see Georgia and the wider team as part of their own.

Then the first draft came back. All three authors were amazed by how well the team had understood their message. Ed described an easy collaboration, with the feeling that everyone was contributing to something special.

For Nicky, becoming an author changed more than she had anticipated. Learning how a book came together also changed how she thought about the ideas inside it. She found herself enjoying the experience far more than she had expected.

A publishing deal and a wider audience

The authors secured a traditional publishing contract with Wiley Capstone, including an advance. Their shared idea became Be More Kid: How to Escape the Grown Up Trap and Live Life to the Full!

Publication brought wider attention. The authors and book featured in Red magazine and the national press, while the book was also spotted on television. Presenters Alison Hammond, Ben Shephard and Sarah Stirk added their endorsements.

Readers could take the ideas further through accompanying resources, giving the authors another way to help people put the book into practice.

New possibilities around the book

As interest grew, Mark began looking at the business that could develop around their work. People wanted to hear what the team had to say and find out what else they could offer. Creating the book had helped them see those possibilities more clearly.

For the three authors, the result reached beyond a finished manuscript. They had brought their experience into one book, found a traditional publishing partner and opened a wider conversation about the work they wanted to do together.
