The ambition: a business book with a purpose

Darren Evans had spent years working to make the construction industry more sustainable. He had developed specialist knowledge, practical insights and a clear understanding of the challenges facing the built environment.

What he wanted was a way to bring those ideas together and share them more widely.

For Darren, writing a book was never simply about becoming an author. It was about establishing a lasting resource for the industry and creating something that could introduce his expertise to potential clients, collaborators and other stakeholders.

As Darren explains:

“I’ve always wanted to have something out there that I could use as a little bit of a calling card.”

He also wanted to help people in his industry find greater clarity about the way forward.

The book would give Darren an opportunity to articulate his thinking, raise the visibility of his organisation and reach people beyond his existing professional relationships.

There was, however, a significant obstacle.

The challenge: making the investment commercially sensible

Like many experienced business leaders, Darren had considered professional ghostwriting and other forms of book creation support. What concerned him was the potential cost and whether the eventual return would justify such a substantial investment.

He explained in his video testimonial that disproportionately high costs associated with some traditional approaches, alongside the project management with multiple freelancers he might have to take on, had made him uncertain about the commercial case for proceeding. The question was not whether he had enough expertise to write a book, or whether the book would be an effective business growth asset. It was whether he could find a practical way to turn his expertise into a credible publication he could use for multiple returns.

Darren needed an approach that worked around his existing responsibilities, allowed him to remain closely involved in developing the content, and preserved the quality expected of a professionally published business book.

The solution: AI-assisted creation, human-led publishing

Darren’s project brought together two complementary forms of support.

ClioBooks.ai helped him plan and draft the manuscript. The Write Business Results team then provided the human-led editorial, production and marketing expertise needed to prepare and launch the finished book.

Darren describes his ClioBooks planning and drafting experience in this WBR-branded testimonial.

Stage 1: planning and drafting with ClioBooks

Using ClioBooks.ai, Darren was able to develop his manuscript around his existing commitments. The platform supported a flexible approach to capturing his knowledge. He could work in longer sessions when time allowed or make progress in shorter intervals between other responsibilities.

He could even record his ideas while walking his dog.

“The flexibility that I had with ClioBooks was absolutely outstanding.”

Darren describes spending anything from 30 minutes to two or three hours working on the manuscript. Once his content had been recorded or transcribed, he could return to it, expand on individual points and add further material as new ideas occurred to him.

This flexibility helped make book creation a practical activity alongside running his business. It also changed the economics of the project.

“When I’m thinking about a return on investment, the model completely shifts.”

For Darren, a more accessible route into manuscript creation meant he could pursue his publishing ambitions without over-committing himself and taking him away from his core business activities.

Stage 2: human-led editorial development with WBR

Once the manuscript had been developed, the project moved into WBR’s professional publishing process.

AI-assisted drafting had enabled Darren to capture and organise his expertise. The next task was to develop that material into a professionally presented book for readers. WBR provided the human editorial input required to review and refine the manuscript, improve its readability and prepare it for publication.

A business book needs more than accurate information. It must communicate ideas clearly, maintain the reader’s interest and deliver a coherent experience from beginning to end. The editorial stage brought professional judgement into the process, complementing the efficiency of the earlier drafting work.

Stage 3: professional design and publication

With the manuscript ready for production, WBR supported the remaining publishing stages, including proofreading, cover design, interior design and publication preparation.

The finished book, The Sustainability Advantage, presented Darren’s approach to sustainable construction in a professional format suitable for his intended audience.

The design gave his ideas a recognisable identity and provided him with a physical and digital business asset that could be shared, recommended and referenced.

Stage 4: launch and marketing

WBR also developed promotional materials to support the book’s release, including social media and email marketing content.

This helped connect the publishing process with Darren’s wider professional visibility. The book launch created an opportunity to introduce his ideas, communicate his achievement and encourage new readers to discover his work.

The Sustainability Advantage was published on 25 November 2025. During its first week, it reached No. 1 in Amazon’s Industrial Design Kindle category.

The personal achievement behind the bestseller

There is another dimension to Darren’s story that makes the achievement especially significant.

In a LinkedIn post celebrating his success, Darren reflected on having failed both English Language and English Literature at school. For years, he had felt embarrassed about those results.

Becoming a bestselling published author gave him a new perspective on that experience.

“For years I felt really embarrassed about my education results, but now I think they are one of my best stories.”

His journey illustrates an important point about business authorship. Professional expertise does not depend on academic achievement in English. Nor does becoming an author require someone to navigate the entire writing, editing, design and publication process alone.

A valuable business book begins with something worth saying. The right combination of technology, professional support and personal commitment can help bring it to life.

Reflecting on his achievement, Darren wrote:

“Working with people is the best way to achieve great success. The best things are not done alone!”

Beyond publication: a book that supports professional authority

Reaching bestseller status was an important milestone, but Darren’s original ambition extended beyond the launch. He wanted a professional calling card, greater visibility for his organisation and a practical way to contribute to the sustainability conversation within construction. Publication gave him a resource through which to pursue those objectives.

His book can be used to introduce his ideas to new audiences, strengthen discussions with industry stakeholders, support speaking opportunities and provide a foundation for further thought leadership. By October 2026, Darren and WBR were exploring how to build on the book’s initial success and activate it more deliberately as a commercial asset.

That represents the next stage of the journey: moving from a successfully published book towards a more systematic approach to using it in business.

The book’s future commercial impact remains to be measured, but the foundation is in place.

What other business leaders can learn from Darren’s experience

Darren’s journey demonstrates that professional book creation does not have to follow a single traditional model.

Technology can make it easier to capture knowledge, develop ideas and produce an initial manuscript. Experienced professionals can then bring the editorial judgement, design expertise and publishing knowledge required to create a finished book. Both have distinct roles.

For experts who want to communicate their knowledge but are concerned about the time, complexity or cost of getting started, that combination can provide a more accessible route to authorship.

Most importantly, Darren began with a clear reason for writing his book. He wanted to share his expertise, strengthen his organisation’s visibility and create something useful for the construction industry.

His bestselling book is now part of that wider professional story.
